Prof. Martin Plenio, Imperial College
Biography: Prof. Martin Plenio is a Professor of Quantum Physics in the Physics Department and Director of the Quantum Information Science Programme at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences both at Imperial College. He has made fundamental contributions to entanglement theory, quantum many-body physics and the implementation of quantum simulation and quantum information processing in systems such as ion traps, cavity QED, BEC and optics. His 130 articles in refereed journals has received more than 5600 citations. He was awarded the Maxwell Medal and Prize of the UK Institute of Physics 2004, a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award 2005 and delivered the Royal Society Clifford Paterson Lecture for 2008. He has recently become interested in Quantum Effects in Biological Systems and has unravelled how Nature uses quantum effects and noise to transport energy which is the topic of his invited talk at the School of Informatics.
