Agency is a word which has almost ubiquitous use in some of the sciences of behaviour, especially artificial intelligence and adaptive behaviour, but what is an agent? Rather than offer a strong theory this talk will emphasize some constraints that might inform our consideration of agency as we find it in natural systems and in systems we might build. These constraints are then used to propose an ordinal classificatory scheme.
