The 'shyness project' (for short) is an EPSRC-funded inter-disciplinary project that involves both the Sociology department, the department of Informatic's Software Systems group and the Interact lab.
Broadly, this project explores how the emergence of various pervasive computing technologies may impact on feelings of shyness within three social settings: the classroom, the office, and the art gallery.
Within these broad research goals, the Interact lab is exploring the impact of pervasive technology on feelings of shyness within the work setting. At present we are focussing upon issues of identity and self presentation and how pervasive technologies may provide opprtunities for users to present themselves differently.
Our initial explorations focus on two facets of identity. The identity co-constructed within social networking sites, and the identity constructed through clothing and self expression on the body.
