Research Interests
I am interested in the study of Artificial Neural Networks and specifically in designing new styles of networks together with appropriate genetic operators for them. To this end, I am interested in where we can take inspiration fom biological systems and whether the resulting architectures can tell us anything about the systems which inspired them.
I am currently working on modelling the diffusible neuromodulator Nitric Oxide (NO) and its effect on nervous systems in conjunction with John Anderson and Micheal O'Shea. This work is also providing insights and inspiration for a new style of neural network which I am working on with Tom Smith and Phil Husbands. Hopefully this enterprise, which combines the most recent research in both Neuroscience and Robotics will help us to both generate a new style of adaptive machine and understand the role of NO in the nervous system.
