Autonomous Robotics

  • AI Lab, University of Zurich, Switzerland.
Headed by Rolf Pfeifer, research focusses on autonomous agent design, from both a cognitive science, and an engineering perspective.
  • AI Lab MIT, USA.
Home to Rod Brooks. Research on mobile robotics, microrobotics, humanoid robotics, artificial muscles, haptic interfaces, and robot hands.
  • Autonomous Agents Research Group, Case Western Reserve University, U.S.A.
Directed by Randall Beer. The evolution of dynamic neural networks for robot control, dynamic systems analysis of adaptive behaviour, and bio-inspired robotics are the main research areas.
  • Intelligent Autonomous Systems Engineering Laboratory, University of the West of England, U.K.
Research includes both collective systems, such as large-scale, ant-inspired collective robotics and flying, flocking autonomous dirigibles, and single agent systems, such as walking robots and driving robots. The lab is also home to the SlugBot project - an interesting attempt to extend robot autonomy to energy self sufficiency - namely a robot that catches slugs and processes them for fuel.
  • The Interaction Lab, University of Southern California, U.S.A.
Led by Maja Mataric, a large amount of their research focusses on autonomous multi-robot systems.

Computational Neuroscience

  • Sussex Centre for Neuroscience
An Interdisciplinary Research Centre, based in the School of Biological Sciences, researching the molecular and cellular mechanisms of the nervous system.
  • Learning and Memory Group
The Learning and Memory Group at Sussex use the pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis, to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms of learning and memory, taking advantage of the identified neuronal systems available for study in this model system.
  • CogPrints Electronic Archive
Large collection of Neuroscience papers available online.
  • Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit
Based at the University College London, their research objectives are the study neural computational theories of perception and action with an emphasis on learning.

Evolutionary Electronics

Artificial Evolution

  • Centre for the Study of Evolution (CSE), Sussex University
The CSE is a multi-disciplinary grouping of academics, drawn from the various Schools of Studies at the University of Sussex, whose common interest is the study of evolution. Members include evolutionary biologists, biochemists, mathematicians and researchers in the field of artificial life and robotics.
  • Evonet
The Network of Excellence in Evolutionary Computing, a European network of Evolutionary Computing researchers.

Sussex University

  • Life Sciences
The School of Life Sciences at Sussex University.
  • Informatics
The School of Informatics at Sussex University.
  • MSc in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems
A one year taught postgraduate course offered by the School of Informatics. The course covers research fields which cross the traditional boundaries between biology, computer science, and cognitive science, and focusses on adaptation in natural and artificial systems.
  • BSc in Neuroscience
A 3 year undergraduate degree course offered by the School of Life Sciences at the University of Sussex.

Miscellaneous

  • Artificial Life Bibliography of On-line Publications
A large, but sadly no-longer udated, list of over 400 online papers, maintained by Dr. Ezequiel Di Paolo.
  • Stelarc
One-time artist-in-residence at the CCNR, Stelarc is an Australian-based performance artist whose work "explores and extends concept of the body and its relationship with technology through human/machine interfaces".
  • The Grey Walter Online Archive
Between Easter 1948 and Christmas 1949, Grey Walter built his first two turtles, Elmer and Elsie. The Grey Walter archive has a brief history and a collection of original photographs of these early autonomous vehicles.
  • Lars Christain Risen
The homepage of the the anthropologist who wrote his thesis on the 'A-Lifers' in COGS about 3 years ago. The page contains a link to the full text html version of his thesis.
