If you are interested in the MSc in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems, please follow this link. This page contains information on DPhil, post-doctoral and visiting research posts. If you are interested in these, please read the following, refer to Inman Harvey's FAQs and email either Inman Harvey or Phil Husbands.
Postdoctoral and visiting researchers
We frequently receive applications from individuals wishing to join our group as either postdoctoral researchers or visiting research fellows. We are always interested in having new people to work with us.
Unfortunately, we are only very rarely able to provide financial support for visitors: we do occasionally hire postdoctoral researchers to work on specific projects (when we do, we advertise on appropriate internet mailing lists, and put a copy of the advert on this web page), but in general if someone wants to come to work with us then they need to provide their own funding.
We are, of course, happy to cooperate in applications to funding agencies: if you can find a source of funds, we may be able to help in providing details for your grant application.
Applying for a DPhil place in the EASy group
We currently have about 30 graduate students working for their DPhil (at Sussex, the PhD degree is actually a DPhil - it's the same thing, just different letters). We are an international research center, and our graduate-student community reflects this: we have students from many countries working with us. Frequently we receive inquiries from people wondering which projects we are looking for graduate students to work on.We do occasionally advertise studentships for specific projects, but this is rare: when we do, we advertise on the internet and place a copy of the advert on this web page.
In general, there aren't any specific projects that we're looking for graduate students to work on: most of our graduate students choose their own projects. If you would like to be considered for a place here, you'll need to make an application on the standard University of Sussex form.
On the application form there is about half a page where you should give details of the issues you would like to investigate in your research. Feel free to write a longer statement on extra sheets of paper if necessary. What you write is influential in deciding who will interview you - usually people are interviewed by the person who would be their supervisor.
If you wish to apply for funding from a source other than the University of Sussex (e.g. your government, the CEC, or a charitable institution) then we may be able to help in providing details for your application.
If you would like more details of Informatics postgraduate opportunities, and instructions for applicants, see the Informatics Graduate Research Centre pages.
Every year we receive applications for DPhil places from many more suitable individuals than we could possibly accept. From October 1996 we have been offering a MSc in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems: you may wish to consider applying for this, as it provides an opportunity to receive detailed tuition in areas such as artificial life, simulation of adaptive behaviour, evolutionary computing, and computational neuroscience; followed by a 5-month research project.
