FREE hands-on, fun and interactive sessions exploring renewable and sustainable energy in Brighton

Build your own energy generator

In these fun experimental sessions we will discuss ideas around Energy and Electricity in Science and Engineering Week 2008 in Brighton. In each session participants will gain practical hands-on experience, contribute to our learning and explore readily available on-line resources to discover whether we can get 'energy for free'. There will also be opportunities to find out about a power scientists' work from an active scientist.  Dr Jonathan Hare from the BBC's Rough Science will be helping and demonstrating his energy devices in these sessions.

The organising team, including scientists, teachers and researchers, will guide participants in how to create energy devices to charge an entertainment gadget. Monitoring the energy generated from these devices, we will see how much is available for use and invite participants to discuss this topical science area.

The e-Science Usability project is working with teachers to find novel ways to teach and learn about every-day science and is building a shared community resource.  We will make many of the items and web sites used available beyond the session for your own interest and for teaching and learning activities, including bookable equipment to enable you to repeat the experiment in other locations.

The sessions are free, last approximately 2.5 hours and will run in Brighton as follows:

  • Saturday 15th March 2008 afternoon for members of the public aged 12 - 92  at Sussex University, Falmer, Brighton.  This session is suitable for everyone over the age of 12 years. Please note those under 15 years must be accompanied by an adult.  Come with another family member or two!
  • Monday 10th March 2008 after school for science teachers and related professionals in Portslade.  Hosted by Portslade Community College science department.

Beyond Science and Engineering Week

In addition to the face-to-face sessions we have organised, we would like you to engage with us in an online dialogue about interesting ways to teach and learn about sustainable energy and electricity. We will link to a blog space shortly and look forward to your contributions and ideas.

About the organisers

The Interact Lab at Sussex, the Mixed Reality Lab in Nottingham and the London Knowledge Lab have conducted research into the application of e-Science in educational contexts and the use of local and remote sensors, remote collaboration and data visualisation in co-laboratories with school children and teachers in a number of recent projects - see the e-Science and SENSE projects. The e-Science project which further investigates the technological, support and usability requirements secondary level teachers have to capitalise on e-Science for their curriculum goals. We aim to share this knowledge, building discussions around participants' experiences of working with teachers and learners in educational contexts, and learning from interactive discussions with workshop participants.
