Leading usability evaluations to WAUTER

27 October 2006 (week 4)

The development of web sites, and especially e-commerce sites is a multidisciplinary exercise where different people speak different languages.

Our ultimate aim is to create an integrated series of tools to help perform usability evaluation of web sites. The set of tools we are proposing would enable the remote acquisition of the end user's actions, and some automatisation of the generation of the task model and analysis of end user actions using set heuristic rules. These tools expand on the results of existing work developed by both Sandrine and Cecile Paris, of CSIRO. These initial results will be presented, before presenting the more recent development:
* Automatic generation of task model - ATMA (Automated Task Model Author).
* Automatic comparison of user action and task model - WEMA (Web EMA): We propose to automatically add annotations to the user log file and task model file based on the new heuristic patterns extended from the basic EMA principle (results from Sandrine's Ph.D.).
* Display of task model and user actions - TAMOT extended : We propose to develop a visual environment where the results of the automatic comparison can easily be seen. TAMOT was initially developed at CSIRO.
