A .  References.  You should give references in an essay like this.  If you don't you may be implying that the ideas are entirely yours. You should also be aware of the rules about plagiarism.

B.  Referencing system. In as much as there is a standard for giving references at Sussex, you should use the author/date or so-called Harvard System   - unless clearly told otherwise.  There are many good online guides. For example:

C.  Correct use of quotations. In general you should only use direct quotes (in quotation marks) from another writer when they have said something more succinctly than you could or you are going to analyse what they say in detail. Do not use direct quotes merely to prove you have read the text in question or to cheat on word count.
